What We Think

Before the article itself, I'd like to share with you an interesting experiment I've participated as a student in sociology course:

One day, as me and the rest of the students entered the class, we saw an old black and white photo of a person, hung on the board.

As we sat down, the lecturer immediately passed along little notes to everyone.

Next, she asked randomly several students to tell the class what they think about the person in the photo:

One student said: "He looks bad, look at his eyes which seem to be evil!".

Another student said: "Actually I see a man with great compassion, his face says it all!".

Another student added: "No way! He looks evil! That's obviously an evil look…".

Finally, the lecturer asked these students to read what was written in their notes:

One note indicated the man in the photo was a German officer who was responsible for sending Jews to death camps.

The other note indicated the man in the picture joined the forces fiercely involved in saving Jews.

Each student in the class received one of the two notes.

Now we can proceed with the article that will be devoted to the insights of this experiment.

How Your Mind Works?

Your mind is a factory that produces thoughts, good and bad thoughts - all day long.

This factory also employed two very hard-working messengers: a messenger of victory / happiness, and a messenger of defeat / depression.

The role of the messenger of victory / happiness is to deliver you positive thoughts like:

Why you can.

Why you do have the necessary skills.

Why you will win / succeed.

The role of the messenger of defeat / depression is to deliver you negative thoughts like:

Why you can't.

Why you won't make it.

Why you don't fit in.

Why you are going to fail.

How To Turn Your Day Into...

To test the work quality of these two messengers, try the following:

Get up in the morning and say to yourself: "Today I'll have a disgusting day!".

This statement would instantly wake up your defeat / depression messenger.

He'll immediately start looking for facts (or "facts") that will support this statement, and then, of course, he would deliver those facts to you.

After a few moments you'll start thinking thoughts (consciously or unconsciously) such as:

I don't like the weather today… (it does not matter whether is hot or cold).

It's going to be a boring day at work...

I'm sure the migraine from yesterday will "visit" once more.

When I'll get back from work my wife will probably find something to fight about.

Yes, the messenger of defeat / depression is also a great salesman and within minutes, he'll persuade you...

Before you'll know it, it is guaranteed the day will turn into disgusting day.

Now try this:

Get up in the morning and say to yourself with conviction: "Today I will have a great day!".

This statement would instantly wake up your victory / happiness messenger.

He'll immediately start looking for facts (or "facts") that will support this statement, and then, of course, he would deliver those facts to you.

In a few moments you'll start thinking thoughts (consciously or unconsciously) such as:

Look, the weather just great (it does not matter whether is hot or cold).

Today I'll definitely have a chance to close the gaps in the project.

I feel healthy today; there is no chance the migraine will pay me a visit...

Maybe when I'll get back from work I'll cook a romantic dinner for me and my wife...

Before you'll know it, it is guaranteed the day will turn into a great day!

The more "work" you provide for one of these two apostles, the stronger and influential that messenger becomes.

The decision with which one of the messengers you'd like to work with each day - is entirely yours.

You choose who you hire every morning... Every day that passes...

If suddenly a bad thought sneaks in your mind, call the messenger of victory / happiness – tell him to get you a new shipment of thoughts!

Summary

You control your thoughts.

You determine what to believe.

What you believe will influence accordingly your day and your attitude to those around you - just like the notes in the experiment influenced the student's opinion, toward the same person in the old photo.

Something to think about: what determines if you see one's cup as half full in a certain situation - is largely depended on the messenger you chose to hire that day.

In fact, the messenger you chose to hire that day, will also determine your opinion about things that are completely neutral, like the weather or your opinion about a stranger, for example.

Finally here's a little secret:

Although the two messengers at the factory are diligent and hardworking, the fact is the messenger of defeat / depression is more diligent and loves working overtime...

What does it mean?

It means the messenger of defeat / depression will always show up for work unless you call the messenger of victory / happiness.

Give the messenger of defeat / depression a nice vacation.

When you think about it, it makes more sense to pay a salary to those who promote you right?
